I use Xubuntu as one option and use "suspend" all the time. It just saves energy, holds the system in RAM and one just has to enter a password to reactivate. System goes into suspend with lid closure too. Full boot is not necessary each time you open the lid. When on my desktop, I would just hit enter and it would come back alive where it was left off. Hope this answers your question. I think if you system is not password protected it might just come back up again without having to reenter it.
