The computer is a Mac PowerPC desktop so "close the lid" is not applicable. Shutdown options in Xubuntu are "shutdown", "logoff" and "suspend". "Suspend" takes me to a black screen but the hard drive continues and after a couple minutes the login password screen reappears. I have not tried "logoff" but I would assume similar, perhaps without the delay. In MacOs there is a "sleep" option which still works if booted into MacOs but sleep is not available, as previously stated, in Xubuntu.
