Hi,

before I start my real message let me introduce myself and our company
as we only recently joined the XML:DB initiative. My name is Irsan Widarto,
I'm the co-founder and (as of March 1st.) VP of Product Strategy at X-Hive
Corporation. We have devloped and are marketing X-Hive/DB, a database for
XML documents. Our company is a (active) member of the W3C, our CTO -Jeroen
van Rotterdam- is a member of the W3C DOM Working Group and we are true fans
of open standards and have implemented several in our product (incl. DOM,
XPath) or are planning to do so (XLink, XPointer). We hope to cooperate with
you guys in the XML:DB initiative to establish the necessary XML database
standards.

My excuses for this somewhat commercial blabla ;-), here is the real stuff:
over the weekend a thread has started on the www-ql (Query Language) mailing
list @w3.org regarding the absence of Update in the the new XQuery Draft
(see:
http://www.w3.org/TR/xquery/). Jonathan Robie of Software AG and one of the
writers of the XQuery spec has commented that Update is not a part of the
XQuery requirements, therefore no effort has been taken so far in that area
by the XQuery WG. But he also notes that there is a "definite interest in
updates". To quote him even more: "the XQuery Editors believe that a syntax
for update would be extremely useful, it is very unlikely that this would be
supported by our algebra in Level 1, and one possibility is that this would
appear as a non-normative appendix in XQuery".

My questions are:

- what is the status of XUpdate (excuses for my non-knowledge on this
subject: I've only scanned archivedb.xmldb.org)?

- how can we incorporate the work that has been done and/or will be done on
XUpdate into the XQuery framework (or better: W3C XML Query framework as
XQuery is only one of the XML Query initiatives)?

Please let me know when (and if so: why) my questions are irrelevant as I've
missed out on the discussions so far.

Regards,

Irsan Widarto.
