There hasn't been a public effort to support Updates in XQuery, but I have spoken to Jonathan Robie who has shared with me a recommendation paper for updates in XQuery. It actually looks very good on the surface. I don't know if I'm able to share it with the group or not, but if Jonathan is monitoring the list, I'll let him chime in.
