Ah, I must have slightly mis-remembered that one then! On my VMware-based VM of OpenSolaris 2008.11 TEST build 98 the VM's window is resized from the text console size and goes completely black, then I get the root weave pattern with the "watch" busy cursor, then it goes blue, then I get the gdm login box with the background image.
