Is there a way to test the video capabilities of the card and monitor
with XORG? With Xsun you could run fbconfig -prconf to get a list of the
resolutions supported by the monitor and the graphics card. Is there an
equivalent command for XORG?

could it be the graphics card only supports DDC 2?

If you still have a motherboard + NVIDIA graphics card combination that
does
read EDID, run nvidia-settings. Under GPU 0 on the left, choose CRT-0.
On the far right choose Acquire EDID... and save the file. If you can
get
a file saved with real data, I can provide instructions on how to get
the driver
to load this file and use the data with your current setup.
