Ah! Great! That certainly makes sense. I don't tend to change the desktop defaults much, so all of my experiments along these lines have been with the Numbus theme. And my experiments with Linux/emacs-gtk where I got no assertions were under Ubuntu. I don't know which theme they use, but it certainly isn't Nimbus. GTK folks: How do we proceed from here? I can provide an emacs-gtk binary if it helps (or follow the directions in the initial positing in this thread to build one). - Ali
