hmnn, the .log says:
(II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1280x768" (no mode of this name)^M

even though there's such a declaration in then Monitor section of 
xorg.conf.  I didn't know you had an xorg.conf.
You can additionally experiment with: moving the xorg.conf out of the 
way, and running withor without the i810 driver.

The problem here is that the early Intel VBIOS doesn't tell the whole 
truth about resolutions to the X server.
We used to use the fixup utility "i815resolution" (later renamed to 
i915resolution) to setup the VBIOS.  That was back when there wasn't
much love getting to the Intel graphics drivers. Today, at least with 
the newer gpus (945, 965), Intel has a large team working on the drivers.
I had hoped that the older gpus would benefit from some of this forward 
work.  Maybe that was a rash wish.
