Well in my case I came up with an easy solution, which I realize wont necessarily helpful to everyone who needs to search the archives but I knew who the contact was whose conversations I needed to search, and I narrowed the time frame down to a ten day period. The conversations were long, so a visual search could have taken hours even with it narrowed down but i copied and pasted them into yahoo emails which i sent to myself, then it was simple to find using the email search.

Messenger does save3 chats. But I guess you do have to use anpther utility to decode them into a text file... which of course can be searched. In a message dated 6/29/2008 2:50:20 A.M. The actual files that are saved in the Yahoo Messenger Program Folder are saved as .dat files (data files) and are written in computer code. When opening the archives with the YM program, it decodes the .dat files into readable text but if you open one of the .dat files with any other program (WordPad, NotePad, Word, etc.), there is just what appears to be jibberish in the document. I believe programs like AIM and Windows Live Messenger actually save the chat sessions as a document which can be searched but not Yahoo Messenger.
