I believe you are partly correct about WMP and Yahoo Messenger problems being related. Yahoo Messenger 9, I believe, has it's own media player built-in. This could cause a conflict especially if you also have other media players installed. Also Messenger 9 has several bugs, I have heard they have just released an update. I suggest you uninstall Yahoo Messenger, then run a registry cleaner such as EasyCleaner or CCleaner (both are free). Then download and install a full version (not the one at the Yahoo Messenger site). I suggest FileHippo as a source as they are usually up-to-date. Messenger 9.0.0.21112 will take you there.
