Please look at the "Help" menu, then About and see which version. There are
a couple of what could be called "current versions" of YM. If you have the
9.0 version, then technically, you are still Beta testing it since it just
came out of Beta and YM, even first out of Beta, is still in Beta until they
do a couple of updates. I personally would never use a X.0 version of YM..
they still have way too many glitches. Wait until X.1 or at least X.0.9 or
something

Windows Media Player has nothing to do with Yahoo Messenger unless you might
have some abstract plug-in... speaking of which, do you have any plug-ins?
I find that plug-ins will only exacerbate many of the glitches in YM so the
first thing you should do if you are having YM problems is to close and
remove ALL plug-ins. Of course, I don't use YM 9.0 so I could be wrong
about WMP being tied to YM now... but that would just be another reason NOT
to use YM 9.0. I don't mind WMP and use it as my primary media player but
it seems tying WMP to YM would only make YM a big resource hog.

I'm wondering if your Java is up to date and working properly? You might
want to check your Add/Remove programs and see if you have Java 6, update
11, which I'm pretty sure is the most recent update. Then make sure you
haven't blocked Java with your firewall anti-spyware software. If you don't
have the most updated version of Java, while in Control Panel, open the Java
applet and on the Update tab, there's a button to "update now". Once you've
installed the most current version, go back to Add/Remove programs and
remove all previous versions of Java.

Since you say you cannot see the IM text at all, have you checked to see if
you have the font color as white (which I mentioned in my first reply) which
would then make it the same color as the background so you wouldn't see it.
You can also see characters that might be hidden in the background by doing
a simulated copy/paste and highlight the text area to see if hidden
characters show up during the highlight in blue/white. Many SPIM's (spam
IM's) will have links and other junk hidden in white font colors so you
don't realize they are there.

I have the current version of Yahoo Messenger, and when I say I cannot see
the text, I mean when the IM box pops up for and incoming message, I cannot
see the text AT ALL. I have also sent an email to Microsoft because of a
problem with Windows Media Player not working, which I believe may be part
of the reason Yahoo is not working.
