OK. Since the Yahoo ID and password are working on other Yahoo services, then it's definitely something to do with the installation of YM, not the ID/password.
Have you rebooted your computer since this issue started happening? If you haven't, try that (you'd be amazed at how many "issues" are often fixed by rebooting a computer) but if that doesn't work either, then it's probably time to do a new, clean and FULL version install of YM. I have an article on my blog about doing a new, clean and FULL version install of YM for XP but other than the location of the Add/Remove Programs section, now called Programs And Features in Vista, the rest of the instructions are basically the same. Further, the running of CCleaner will also clean out your Temp Internet Files, which will also clean out your cookies folder if you allow it to. Often, cookies will be the reason for sign-in issues as the cookies are one way that websites remember you. If you do not want to clear out all of your cookies, at least, using CCleaner, go through and remove ALL of the Yahoo related cookies. Make sure you have all of your ID's/passwords remembered or written down if you choose to remove all cookies. There's one other thing you can check, even with YM not signed in, you can access the Messenger Menu and Connection Preferences. Check your Connection Preferences to make sure they are set properly.
