Here's the link to anyone else interested in running the OneCare scan as part of their "Protection" "Tune-up" and "Clean-up" maintenance on their computers.
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm You'll see links to Protection, Clean-up (which includes the Registry Cleaning) and Tune-up... and then the button for Full Service Scan which runs all three. (SNIP) What does the complete scan do? The complete scan runs all three scans offered by the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner: The protection scanner checks your computer for and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software (also called malware). It also checks your computer for common open ports that might make your computer more vulnerable to online threats and hackers. The clean up scanner automatically checks your hard disk for any unnecessary files and gives you the option to delete them. It also checks your registry for stray data that may have become obsolete and gives you the option to delete it. The tune up scanner checks your hard disk for its level of fragmentation and, if it's more than 10% fragmented, asks if you'd like to defragment it. (END SNIP) Once the scan is done, it then gives you the option to allow it to do it's thing or for you to customize what it does. The down arrows will expand information for each phase of the scan and then you can see what OneCare is about to do, including the Registry Cleaning. Now onto YM... Yes, when you download YM from Yahoo's website, you will eventually get the full version but the way Yahoo does it is they first download a 500KB Installer program which then has to connect to the Yahoo Servers and it starts downloading the rest of YM, usually 10MB to 15MB, depending on the version. It is during this phase that errors in packets occur... as we know Yahoo Servers are not the most reliable. ;-) If your Program File for YM is showing 21MB, it is likely due to the other stuff in that file like archived chats, photo sharing pics, etc. If you look in your Add/Remove programs section, you'll see the actual size of the program itself. When you download a FULL version of YM from one of the 3rd party download sites like FileHippo.com, Download.com, MajorGeeks.com, etc., you will be getting the full version as one complete download... not in pieces and parts like Yahoo does it. This results in less of a chance of corrupt file(s). Further, after downloading a full version from one of these other sites, you can always run a Check Sum on the download to make sure it downloaded with integrity. I also prefer to download programs first, then once I have them downloaded, then execute the Run phase. When downloading from Yahoo, they only give you the Run phase which starts installing the pieces and parts directly from the web instead of allowing you to download the file first, check it's integrity (and scan it for malware), then Run/Install the program. I have been using Windows Live OneCare for several years....it does perform most of the tasks you mentioned, but I don't believe it touches the registry. But I do run it once a month to keep my computer as "clean" as possible. Yes, both my friend and I have high-speed connections, and we had no problems with file transfers while using the older version. I agree with you completely about "if it isn't broke, don't fix it," but in this case I went ahead anyway, and I do like the new features on version 9.x. By the way, I was prompted by Yahoo IM that a newer version was available, and installed it just by clicking on the prompts that then appeared...and my Messenger IM file is 21MB in size...so can I assume I have the "full" version? Probably my German friend will need to uninstall/reinstall in order to get our problem solved. If he does, I'll let you know what happened. I've been using WinASO and CCleaner Registry Cleaners on ALL of my computers (XP and Vista) for many years without a single problem. Microsoft even includes a Registry Cleanup as part of their OneCare service (now being discontinued as a paid service but still available as a free online scan... link in my article). OneCare Online Scan, with the full scan, does a virus scan, checks your firewall, cleans the registry, deletes temp files and defrags the hard drive. Why wouldn't folks want to clean out their registry of left over junk entries from uninstalled programs, etc.? To me, it seems that common sense would dictate that the computer would be more stabile with all of this junk removed from the registry. Maybe these experts remember the early days of Registry Cleaners when they would sometimes cause problems but the two I use and a couple of others that I've seen mentioned in various forums show nothing but positive results with using them as part of a scheduled maintenance/tune-up program. I run WinASO and CCleaner on a weekly basis on my most used computers, maybe monthly on my lesser used computers.... as part of my regular security and maintenance on my computers. Everything from backing them up, security updates and scans, etc. OK... back to YM. LOL... I do see where I stopped in mid-sentence. Now let me see if I can figure out what I was going to say. (Jeopardy Music) I think I was going to touch on this and decided to ask you the questions about whether it has happened on every occasion or not which is why I did not finish that sentence and I guess I just forgot to delete it. Sporadic failures of sending files, webcam connections, random disconnects of YM, etc., are attributable to Yahoo Server farm issues but since he has not been successful in sending a large file at all since upgrading, I would suspect a bad install of YM 9.0x. Since trying to fix a quirk in YM is nearly impossible (to my knowledge), it's easier to do the uninstall, clean-up and reinstall of the FULL download version, that is what I'd have to suggest at this time. Make sure, after he downloads the full version of YM, that he turns off his firewall and anti-malware programs while doing the install of YM. This gives YM a better chance of getting a clean installation without losing one or more of the thousands of little .dll files that make up YM. Let us know if the FULL version install works. I guess I should ask but I'm presuming you both have high(er) speed internet connections.... right? I can't imaging trying to share videos on an old dial-up connection but I know that YM Cam-chatting does work for folks with dial-up connections so maybe the file transfers do as well. If he is on dial-up, then I would suspect some kind of timing out issue that might be causing the larger file to quit transferring. If this is the case, then he should probably go back to the older version that was working for him. The same page where I recommend getting the FULL download version, FileHippo.com, also has where one can download a full version of an older version. On a side note, why did he upgrade? If he was using YM 8.1x, there was no immediate need to upgrade to 9.0x and like the old saying goes... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I still run YM 8.1x on all but one of my computers and only upgraded my Vista computer to 9.0x so that I would be better able to help folks out here. It's great to have a reliable resource for problems with YM. Yes, the problem has occurred every time for larger, video files (but they are usually less than 10MB). The smaller, picture files get through fine, but the larger files stop after a short time. This was not a problem with the previous version, and the files were approximately the same size. You started to give some advice when the problem was every time, but you didn't complete the sentence.... It does seem to be a one-way problem, in that usually my files (both small and larger) transfer to my German friend, but there was one instance when my picture file was stopped. I read your blog post about installing a full version of YM, so this will be an option, depending on what you say. However, your advice to run a registry cleaner is strongly discouraged by another Yahoo group that I am a member of (The Help Group)...the experts there think it's unwise for an average computer user to do this. What say you? Thanks again! If it's happened every time with the larger file, If only sporadically, then it is likely due to server issues with Yahoo. Usually signing out and back in will get one onto a different server... hopefully one that is not having issues. If that does not work, then he may have a faulty install with one or more scrambled files as part of the thousands of files that are installed during a typical installation of YM. If they used the main Yahoo website for installing YM, they should try downloading a FULL version of YM instead of the small Install version that Yahoo has folks download. I find many problems related to doing the Installer version and I ONLY use FULL versions when I install YM on my own and other's computers and I rarely see problems when done this way. I wrote an article about this with step-by-step instructions that you/your friend can follow to do a clean and FULL install and see if that solves the problem. http://lennyvasbinder.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-i-always-do-clean-instal-ofl- yahoo.html If the link breaks, go to my main blog link in my sig and on the left side, you will see "Labels" with a link to the article. I use YM mainly to "talk" to a friend in Germany, and to share video and picture files. I updated to version 9.0.0.2162 about a month ago, and for awhile my German friend still had the older version (apparently it was available first in the USA, before Europe?)....no problems during that time. But just after he updated, we started having a problem in that his video files would not transfer to me...they would start, but after about 10 seconds stop and a message informing me of same. His picture files transfer without difficulty. And, the odd thing is, all of my files transfer to him without a problem, during the same session. Has anyone else experienced this? I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to go about fixing it. Thanks alot! Bob
