In all of the instances where I've seen YM infected with malware, it's
usually where the recipient would get an IM, usually with a link, appearing
to be from someone on their friends list, but their friend did not know they
were sending out these malicious IM's. I regularly get IM's from a few of
my friends with a long IM about some weight loss fruit or something and a
link. Of course, I never click the link and eventually, I'm able to alert
my friend that they are sending out these IM's and links and then help them
clean out their computer.

I know my computer is clean and yet I am the one getting these IM's. Since
it was you that received the IM, I would suspect it came from your friend,
not from you... but I guess anything is possible. Download, install and run
the two programs I suggested below and let us know if they find anything.

I'm not sure why the malicious IM would disappear from your IM window but
possibly it is designed to do that when someone clicks on the link. Since
I've never clicked the link, the IM's stay in the IM window and in my
archives. Do you save your archived chats? If yes, check in there on the
day and with the friend you were chatting with to see if it's still in there
or not.

On a side note, are you using an updated browser? If you are still using an
old version of Internet Explorer, then you really shouldn't be surfing the
net at all as those old versions are VERY SUSCEPTIBLE to drive by malware
just by visiting a website.

Further, besides the two anti-malware programs for manual scanning, below,
if you are not using a real-time antivirus, antimalware and firewall, might
I suggest Comodo Internet Security which is FREE from http://www.Comodo.com
and it's a very good security suite that does not use up a lot of resources
compared to suites like Norton or McAfee. I run CIS on all three of my
computers, including an OLD one with only 384MB or RAM and even it runs fine
with CIS keeping it clean, although I still run weekly scans with
MalwareBytes, a-Squared Free, Spybot, etc., but these other three programs
rarely find anything more than a tracking cookies. Comodo's firewall is an
award winning standalone program and their antivirus and antimalware have
come a long way in the past year and I saw where the CIS program ranked in
the top three or four of security suites with over a 97% protection score.
The programs ahead of Comodo scored like 98% and 99% but they were NOT free
programs. I'm not sure there's much difference between 97% and 99% for that
matter... as they are all excellent scores.

Lenny,

I can understand how the Malware could do "typing" for him, but AFAIK, there
is no way for a remote IM to make a post disappear on my IM screen (right?).
That's why I believe that it was me who had been hacked.

Ben
