Cope is using cheap strategies to lure vulnerable people to vote for
them in the upcoming local government elections in the Eastern Cape and
the Border Region in particular. One wonders if projects such as this one
are sustainable seein that June 16 comes only once a year.We must
remember, these people will never stop being opportunists and their
actions will always be reflective of that tendency.

One thing the liberation movement must be careful of and deal with it
vigorously as it is in government, is to root out corrutpion and all its
manifestations in the public sector. The Monitoring and Evalution Unit,
in the Presidency must monitor all government activities in all
spheres, including the appointment of people in key strategic posts.I
know that we do need skills and knowledge to strenghthen the capacity of
governement entities to deliver, but we must be careful not to be corned
by Cope artists because they might exist within the movement.

Cope youth help out at Second Creek

Daily Dispatch 2009/06/17
CONGRESS of the People (Cope) Youth Movement celebrated Youth Day
yesterday by highlighting the plight of residents of Second Creek
informal settlement in East London .

The Cope Youth Movement donated food, blankets and clothes to the
residents who live off the nearby dump site.

Besides food and clothes, motivational talks and games were also planned
for yesterday afternoon.

Azola Mapisa, a member of Cope Youth Movement's media committee, said
they had been touched by the plight of the residents who were once
featured in a television programme, Cutting Edge, scavenging on the dump
site.

"As youth of Cope we came together and decided to celebrate June 16 with
the young people of Second Creek and hand out whatever we could -
clothes and food we had collected from our members in East London, King
William's Town and Mdantsane."

Nhlanhla Mosele, Buffalo City Cope Youth Movement chairperson, said
their action symbolised the ideal that the youth of Cope wanted to give
"change and hope to every community in South Africa".

"This is an ongoing project. It does not end here today. We will ensure
that this community gets what it deserves," he said.

Xolie Khulu , deputy chairperson in Buffalo City Cope Youth Movement,
said they believed an organisation should be near where the people were
and should involve themselves in its programmes.

"We want to have a role in bettering their conditions and we want them
to get services."

Cope provincial leader Siphatho Handi said the Cope leadership had gone
along to support the activities of the youth

"We felt so touched by the actions of the youth, especially the
identification of this area as an area of focus. We feel they needed the
necessary support."

Handi said what Cope had promised during the election campaign should be
sustained.

"All programmes we advocated when we campaigned must find a way of being
fulfilled. We need to support these people."

He said Cope would soon reveal details of its support to the Second
Creek community, whose members find themselves isolated and eating from
rubbish bins. "It's too early to let the cat out of the bag," he said,
adding that Cope was not prioritising Second Creek because of Cope
membership.

"Something must be done and we are prepared to support whoever comes to
do something about their livelihood."

Handi insisted that yesterday's activities formed part of Youth Day
celebrations and were not part of party politicking. "These were
students and the majority were not politically affiliated but fought for
one objective, that Afrikaans not be a medium of instruction," said
Handi, recalling how June 16 came into being.

Resident Victoria Alexander said: "I am pleased by what is happening.

"We see it for the first time. We are thankful to the young Cope people.
