What is the Role of Trade Union in advancing National Democratic Revolution...
Cadres, the above question need to be unpack in not to make only a points. I think it need all cadres to frank on it and clearly identify the role of trade unions in the revolution, especially in South Africa after 1994. The reason why I raise this question is because of the current developments in our country, I will be specific... This year members of SAMWU (South African Municipal Workers Union) has reach a deadlock with SALGA that is what suppose to become an employer which is structure lead by cadres of the movement, different mayors and some prominent leaders those who participated in this revolution. The demands are reasonable and the respond and the proposal from the Conciliatory was to my view fair. But there us a mood that workers want to engage on strike because of the offer that is on table. As workers, we were of the view that we want 15% and the employer clearly state that he can give us only 10.5%, while the conciliatory proposed 11.5%. So now million dollar question, are we really advancing an elements of socialism if us, people those who suppose to protect, defend and sacrifice for this freedom we choose to be greedy and betray our own movement.? What is exactly role of trade unions? Because most of them they are in forefront when there is time for wage negotitations, they don`t assist in terms of strategy on how can as workers fight poverty. They don`t engage in strategies on how can we as workers being part in this development of our own country by encouraging workers to be productive and patriotic. At the moment I personally think that there is third force infiltrating our progressive trade unions in causing difficulties as far as service delivery is concern. Example: City of Joburg Emergency Services workers went on strike for almost a month, who suffered? Is not their employers, not their medical supplier not Amos Masondo for sure. People those who suffer is our working class and the poor. Because they cannot afford private ambulance services, the money our people earning far less for them to be able to have medical aids. SAMA: Doctors are worse, they go on strike during the day and work at private hospitals during the nite. Who is suffering working class and the poor those who utilise the public hospitals etc. Cadres don`t get me wrong some unions are very progressive they fight brutality of capitalism, but they failed to stop monopoly, they fail to stop capitalism. I think, this is my view that there is a third force that actually instigate the whole processes of the demonstrations especially by doctors. We are now in need of all movements to make sure that we build and support this government. I'm referring to those individuals who are known to be abusing their powers in office; performing their duties to them is not as important as flounting their newly acquired wealth; they ask bribes, ask sexual favours, bunk work. An careful study of chronicles of factors that have always led to the downfall of African governments (post-colonialism) proves that maladministration, nepotism, favouratism and tolerance for mediocrity has led to total collapse of their bureaucracies. The TM era has come and gone; what counts most is not to sit around, point out at government's failures when it is, at times, our very own comrades who are failing the system; this defeats the whole purpose; it is infact counterrevolutionary! We can't risk having our new pro-democratic administration fettered by few corrupt individuals who are out to drive thier own narrow self-indulgent agenda.
