But it is out of the ordinary in terms of what had become ordinary. For a long time after the first elections, if you remember, there were hardly any real strikes, everything was about the negotiating table, no wage dispute was won or lost on the streets. This began to change in 2005. Not only are the union leaders finally leading a fight, but workers are regaining the confidence to challenge capitalists, and also the capitalist priorities that may persist in local government, for example. This wave of strikes continues where the 2007 strikes left off - demanding, and expecting, that workers' needs must be met under a new dispensation.
