*YCLSA statement on the horrific Bus Accident in the Western Cape* *7 May 2010*
The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) sends heart-felt condolences to the families of the victims, who were involved in the tragic bus accident recently in the Western Cape. The accident is evidence of much needed intervention by government within our transport services in South Africa as a whole. Its predominantly the poor majority of our people that are subjected to appalling conditions and unroadworthy transport services as pricing determines the quality of Transport services in our country. Private operators are clearly driven by profits and greatly neglect safety requirements to the detriment of Public Transport users. We urge the SAPS and the Prosecution to not only charge the bus driver but equally the owner of the Bus service Company. Owners or Operators normally get off such cases with fines or bans and it’s the workers that will take the fall for such accidents. Questions need to be raised as to why the driver had no assistant driver and why the Owners did not do the necessary Safety inspection and service for the Bus. The Bus was overloaded and this is a violation which operators are clearly aware of. If the Bus driver is liable he should be charged but the Owners of the Company should also be charged with criminal liability for the lives lost in this accident.
