*OFFICE OF THE ANC CHIEF WHIP WELCOMES PROMPT RESPONSE FROM PETITIONS
COMMITTEE ON TOLLS*

**

*20 October 2011*

**

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip in the Gauteng Legislature notes and
welcomes the announced date (11 November 2011), for the public hearings in
relation to the tolling system proposed in Gauteng. We applaud the Petitions
Committee headed by Hon. Jacob Khawe for ensuring that the process unfolds
swiftly. This asserts that the views of all Gauteng Citizens remain
instrumental in shaping an amicable solution for the matter.

****

We encourage all organisations on behalf of their constituencies and private
citizens who have submitted the petitions to utilise this opportunity to
raise their concerns and further give direction with respect to the tolling
system. Infrastructure in the Gauteng economy remains a driving force in job
creation and sustainable development. People of Gauteng should at all times
be involved in decisions which will impact on their livelihood.

****

As the ANC Caucus we will allow this process to unfold and be guided by the
voice of Gauteng people prior to engaging externally or in the house on the
matter. This remains in line with our democracy and public participation
policy, as advocated by the Legislature. We urge all members of the
legislature to respect this process and allow Gauteng citizens an
opportunity to raise their views and avoid pre-empting outcomes based on
their perceptions on the matter. ****
