The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared the Democratic
Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Peter Mutharika as the winner of the May
20 presidential election with 36.4 percent of the vote.

Confirming the results in Lilongwe late on Friday, MEC Chairperson Maxon
Mbendera said Mutharika beat other contenders for the presidency with
1,904,399 million votes nationwide ahead of his nearest rival Dr Lazurus
Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) who garnered 1,455,480 votes
representing 27.8 percent.

Incumbent President Joyce Banda polled 1,056,000 votes representing 20
percent while the youthful Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front
(UDF) got 717,000 votes representing 13.7 percent.

"By virtue of the authority vested in me, I hereby declare candidate
Professor Peter Mutharika and running mate Saulos Chilima as President and
vice president elect respectively of the Republic of Malawi," Mbendera said.

The MEC official advised the president elect to stay focused on the
country's challenges and spend taxpayers' money effectively and honestly and
remain accountable to Malawians regardless of tribe, religion and region.

Mbendera told the losers in the election to accept the outcome and work with
Mutharika, the brother of late President Bingu Wa Mutharika who died in 2012
and was succeeded by Joyce Banda.

Earlier on Friday, High Court judge Kenyatta Nyirenda had ruled that the
electoral body was free to announce official results.

Over seven million people were registered to vote for president, 193 MPs and
462 ward councillors in Malawi's first presidential, parliamentary and local
elections since the advent of multi-party democracy in 1994.
