Mpumalanga:

COSATU, SACP unhappy about removal of four mayors

"No consultation"

COSATU and the SACP in Mpumalanga have accused the ANC of disrespecting the
tripartite alliance by dismissing four municipal mayors without informing
the alliance partners.

The ANC released a statement on Tuesday confirming Salome Sithole
(Emalahleni mayor), Caroline Morajane (Lekwa in Standerton), Tiny Mthimunye
(Dr JS Moroka in Siyabuswa) and Bafana Ncongwane (Thaba Chweu in Lydenburg)
had been recalled.

Their replacements are Lindiwe Nthsalintshali (Emalahleni) Linda Dlamini
(Lekwa), Rhoda Mathabe (Dr JS Moroka) and Selina Mathabe (Thaba Chweu).

COSATU provincial spokesperson Fidel Mlombo said: "We heard the news on
social media. We have not been contacted officially by the ruling party
regarding the decision to reshuffle the local government structures. This is
not the first time the ruling party takes serious decisions without
consulting the alliance partners.

"We are not happy as the alliance. We are going to try to open communication
channels to get reasons on why this only happened now when we are a few
months to the local government elections. There are worse-performing
municipalities, so we need to know why they only fired the mayors from the
four municipalities."

SACP provincial spokesperson Bonakele Majuba said: "The decision of
recalling the mayors was made without consulting us. We were there when they
appointed the mayors but now we heard on the news that they have been
removed."

When asked why the tripartite alliance was not consulted concerning the
removal of the mayors, ANC provincial spokesperson Sibusiso Themba said:
"For now I cannot comment on the issue of consultation, I will interact with
my seniors first and come back to you. However, I can confirm that we have
recalled the mayors because their municipalities are not performing well.
This is in the line with preparations for the local government elections."

Mpumalanga-based independent political analyst Gakwi Mashego has welcomed
the dismissal of the mayors but has said the timing was wrong.

"I would like to believe that the action is being guided by a need to
improve service delivery in the municipalities. However, the contest playing
itself out with the impending provincial conference cannot be separated from
it," Mashego said.

"There are worse-performing municipalities such as Bushbuckridge
municipality, where service delivery regularly breaks down, but we hardly
see such actions being taken."

The DA in the province said in a statement: "Now is the time for competent
and skilled mayors to be appointed. Replacing an incompetent crony with
another will not improve service delivery."
