Protesting Phalaborwa residents have called for justice after a man who was
arrested during demonstrations at Majeje village died in police custody on
Tuesday.

Majeje Community Development Trust secretary Petrus Mashego yesterday said
residents were shocked and angered by the death of a fellow resident at the
hands of police.

"We want justice to take its course and those responsible for his death
should be punished," Mashego said.

Provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto identified the man as
37-year-old Peter Maluleke.

"The cause of death is not yet known. The post mortem will be conducted and
Independent Police Investigative Directorate has taken over the
investigations," Otto said.

Residents interviewed claimed that Maluleke was not part of the
demonstrations.

"He was not even part of the protest. Police just picked him up while he was
near the bar lounge."

Maluleke was arrested and locked inside a cell where he was found dead the
following day. It is not known if police had assaulted him.

Police have been engaged in running battles with residents since Monday as
community members demanded to see the financial books of the Majeje Royal
Palace.

Angry villagers torched a tribal office and blockaded roads after getting
unsatisfactory responses from Hosi Ntsanwisi about the expenditure and
income on the tribal accounts. Ntsanwisi declined to comment.
