note that these urls are the same, but are indexed as different ones:
http://www.foo.com/test/ http://foo.com/test/ http://www.foo.com/test/index.html http://foo.com/test/index.html
Well, they might currently reference the same content, but those URLs are most definitely different. Depending on server config, they could easily point to different documents.
As far as i know, the only thing you can normalise securely in a URL is the slash at the end of the domain name :
http://www.foo.com = http://www.foo.com/
All others "URL normalisation mechanisms" i know are effectively not secure. I'm very interested if someone can push forward other non data loss URL tricks.
