I am under the impression - rightly or wrongly - that the social potential
of del.icio.us has been hamstrung by insistence that tags are mnemonic
devices, and only mnemonic devices. There have been statements on this list
to the effect that tags not intended as mnemonic aids are "bad" tags.
This does not take account of other potential uses for tags. E.g., I almost
always choose tags with a view not only to retrieving my own bookmarks, but
also to other people discovering them. This seems to be core to the SBM
concept - but specifically discouraged by the del.icio.us team (at least in
the past - and perhaps for "good reasons," e.g., due to technological
constraints.)
In any case: If you are, in fact, hampered by any such residual confusion,
best to exorcize it sooner rather than later, as it will directly affect
your success at improving "the social part" of your software.
