Diane

The Apple Keychain may have been the problem. As you suggested
I ran the Keychain First Aid and got all kinds of red notes saying

Item ³pop.smtp.att.yahoo.com² has unspecified value for port attribute
Item ³pop.smtp.att.yahoo.com² has unspecified value for port attribute

I ran the Repair twice and it finally cleared up the mess.

Let see if works!

Thanks for the tip
