Hi Jim!

If you're not sure you got a good clean install then a re-install may still
be a good idea.

The "Quit Apps" script that you mention is part of the Office 2008
installers and has made its appearance before. Normally, you shouldn't see
this because its purpose it to quit any open Office applications before
replacing them. However, it's not foolproof and can be problematic.

Do this:

Go to Apple menu --> System Preferences... --> Accounts and create a brand
new Mac OS X user account where Office has never been used. Don't launch
Office at all here and make sure that you are completely logged out of any
other Mac OS X user accounts on your Mac.

This puts you into a state where nothing in Office can be active.

Run the uninstaller in this new account and then run your installer followed
by updates. This should give you a clean install.

Return to your regular Mac OS X user account and launch your Office
applications.

Hope this helps!
