This morning, my Mac Pro (Snow Leopard, Software Update current) started
spewing windows reporting "Microsoft Sync Services Encountered a Problem and
needs to close," with offers to send reports to Microsoft and a default
checkbox activated to restart sync services. I sent a few dozen before
tiring of this. (Deactivating the checkbox to restart MS Sync Services did
NOT stop the spawning of the error messages).

I'm running fully updated MS Office Mac 2008 (but not Exchange Services
Edition). I had Sync Services set to synchronize events, contacts, and
Entourage Notes.

I read this:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/syncservices.html>

I rebooted. That didn't stop the error.
I turned off MS sync services in Entourage Prefs (all three options). That
stopped the error.

Next, I searched my Entourage Database for events where the subject "Does
not exist." It didn't find any. (I tried looking at ALL my events as a list,
but the only item that SHOWS UP in the list view of events IS the event
subject, so that wasn't useful).

I deleted all ToDos that had no subject.
I deleted one instance of any duplicated ToDos (if possible, the one not
assigned a category, because that could have come from another application
iCal or my iPhone 3G). There were fewer than a dozen of these.

Then, I turned MS Sync Services back on just for events. Thus far, no error
reports (30 minutes running at most, but earlier they were popping up faster
than I could deal with them, probably one every 10 seconds or so). I've not
tried syncing my iPhone yet (which I do through iTunes, NOT through
MobileMe, although I have a MobileMe account).

The two things I've changed in the past day were to install the newest (Snow
Leopard compatible) version of Dymo Label software, which uses the Apple
Address Book for its database, and to update "Growl" to version 1.2. Growl
is used by dropbox, among other communicating apps, but I don't think it's
involved in my problem.

The Entourage Help Page mentions "Synchrospector." Is this still relevant
with Snow Leopard? An item listed as "SimpleStickies" is still there and
says it's for Snow Leopard.

For the moment, my plan is to leave MS Sync Services enabled for a few
hours. I'll add and delete a few test events both to my calendar in
Entourage and to my "Entourage" calendar in iCal. If I get no error reports,
then I'll turn event synchronization OFF in Entourage prefs and turn it ON
for Entourage Notes and see what happens, then turn IT off and turn MS Sync
Services on for Address Book entries (with the Dymo Label prefs set NOT to
use Apple Address Book for ITS database). If those all work without
triggering the MS Sync Services error report, I'll set the new Dymo Label
app to use the Apple Address Book and see if that triggers the error
reporting.

Does that sound like a reasonable approach? Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Jim Robertson
