I went back to the default settings of 192.168.1.254 gateway.2wire.net and started getting the error messages again when I tried to pop my mail at pop.att.yahoo.com. I added two of the better DNS's from a recent namebench run and I now have less error messages. After messing around with the System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS, I have come to the conclusion that adding one ahead of default really helps. The generic 8.8.8.8 google-public-dns-a-google.com works as good as anything. The namebench always seems to find a better selection even it you use the one it last said was best.
