The rate is initially set to 1 Mbits and switch to 11 Mbits once the driver is associated. At least, that's what i've observed here. So since the channel is changing, your card is probably still trying to associate. Look at dmesg to see message about SoftMAC authentication. btw, it seems that most DHCP client put the interface down which switch the rate to 1 Mbits again and then the interface is no longer working.
