Steve;

Interesting insight.  Don't know much about gnosticism.    And who would be
Morpheus the Leader and the one who finds Neo, in the gnostic symbology?.

>Hi Maria. It may interest you to know that The Matrix makes numerous
references to what scholars call "gnosticism". The classic gnostic
myth story was that human beings are sparks of light (consciousness)
trapped in a material world that is not real. They are kept there in
perpetual reincarnation by demonic powers called "Archons" (rulers),
which correspond to the Sentinels in the movie. The Archons are the
minions of a being called The Demiurge, who corresponds to The Architect in the
3rd movie. Neo represents the Gnostic Christ who
helps humanity escape from imprisonment in the delusiory material
world. Trinity represents the Lower Sophia, while The Oracle represents the
Higher Sophia. In the classic Gnostic myth, Sophia
represents the principle of enlightenment which has a higher and
lower aspect. The Higher Sophia represents the Light-Thought of enlightenment,
while the Lower Sophia represents humans still
not free, but starting to connect with their higher Christ-Consciousness. That
is why Trinity and Neo are lovers. In the
Gnostic myth, The Christ-Consciousness comes to rescue Mary Magdelene,
the Lower Sophia. There are, of course, references to other cultural ideas, as
well as ancient Gnosticism. But many of the terms and ideas
are Gnostic. One of the ships is even called The Gnosis.
