You always have your answer, as the answer/action arises in the moment.
Anything else is theorizing.
Your story sounds like my own personal story of what I would likely do,
but our stories are irrelevant theorizing that does not help the child
any more than the passers by.

PS - The social and physical environment clearly plays a role in
peoples' conditioning. To say "Chinese people" though, as if that
matters or has meaning to the child's fate, is just more theorizing.
People passing by are not ignorant/uncompassionate because of their
birthplace any more than the child was ignored or uncared for because of
that. This sort of perception may arise in us, but is our own reaction
to "foreign", to "other". People are not evil, they create the
appearance of evil through acting out of ignorance. Perhaps some places
are more conducive to breeding such ignorance, but that's just
theorizing. Useless, as you have already noted.
