When I saw the name "Sekida" in the list of book authors in the group's
masthead online, I was reminded of him as an old favorite author in the days
when I was some years into practice.
For me his important book is: Katsuo Sekida, ZEN TRAINING (1975), one of the
Weatherhill books.
His introduction of the technique of "bamboo breathing" was a real gift to me.
He teaches it well in the book, so I won't introduce it here, but it's a method
of changing the rhythm and depth of the breathing in zazen, at a certain point,
in order to make a change.
Sekida writes that it can facilitate entry into samadhi.
This is not his only book, but it is his practical one: I understand that
Sekida has translated some sutras, too.
One practitioner I know had met Sekida long ago, and she tells me that he
is/(was) a fine pianist, also. I already feel lots of gratitude toward Sekida,
for teaching about bamboo breathing, but knowing that he was an accomplished
and sensitive musician is adding another jewel to his crown to appreciate.
Are there others here who have practiced this "bamboo breathing"? (Or maybe his
book has also been important in general to you).
