Merle, it's the differing space between the joints in the bamboo... the breath can be broken-up like this, some while into zazen, to cause a change, and to help an entry into samadhi. No other artifice is needed. This is ancient and proven technology, suited to the human makeup... even if you do not wear makeup. *I* don't, usually.
