Joe,
In effect, my question to Edgar was:
Did the single cell organisms that first emerged from the primeval slime
possess buddha nature?
If not, why, when and how did buddha nature develop later?
Edgar responded.
"Buddha nature is what reality is made of, humans just partake of it
because they are part of reality like everything else. The corollary is
that everyone is already enlightened all the time because reality is all
that exists. So realization is just a matter of realizing you are
already enlightened. --Edgar"
