Merle, Exactly. Children (any many ignorant adults also) need to be educated in the consequences of their actions partially via shoulds, woulds and coulds. If one doesn't understand the causal world one can't function in the world of forms and one CANNOT eventually realize Zen...
It in itself is not Zen, but it's an essential step on the way...
