I am a Trekkie. Vulcans practiced Meditation and were coldly unemotional with
very disciplined "minds". Surak was the founder of Vulcan "Logic" and set down
the complicated rules 2000 years before the time of Star Trek.  At the time of
Surak, Vulcan was in the throws of a civil war that threatened to destroy the
planet.  Surak felt that the uncontrolled emotions of the Vulcan people was
the source of this violence.  He set out rules for restoring Vulcan society to
the "true path" of non-violence and logic. A disciplined mind, free of
emotional
control, allowed the practioner to remain rational, logical. That is the
perception that many people have of those who meditate.  All of the foresaid is
allegorical, based upon a fiction, however, a life based upon meditation and
nonviolence is not too bad of an idea.  Zen does not teach nonviolence though.
As I recall the Japanese Samurai practiced Zen.

Joe,

First officer Spock should NOT put you in mind of zen since he represents pure
logic...Bill!
