Don't worry - it could well be me! I just don't see where belief comes into it. 
Ritual - yes. But even that is only a means, or tool, towards (or for 
deepening) awakening. I see it more as a system of efficacy rather than a 
system of belief.

Mike,

I think you've misunderstood me or I you.

I'm saying that zen is NOT a religion and that Buddhism is.  Buddhism is a 
system of belief based PARTIALLY on what Buddha taught but as practiced today 
has embellished that a lot.

I would also say Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus, but the two 
are certainly not the same thing.
