It's a wonderful perspective you bring, and I thank you for it.

Zen practice is different from guru practice because the zen teacher is not a 
guru.  He is a doctor involved in your treatment, and he can tell when you are 
well, and when you can then take care of yourself.  The patient can almost 
never tell these things.

By the way, a true guru, the Tibetan Lama, Chogyam Trungpa, wrote that:

"The Guru is a dangerous friend."
