Edgar,
Why, I'm delighted that you might be looking for another solar system to live
in! ;-)
Sure, amateur radio operators could offer a lot of examples, either for sale
off-the-shelf, or from piecemeal integration of parts. My own system for Ham
comm's here is too idiosyncratic to recommend: just a couple of panels and a
couple of deep-cycle RV lead-acid batteries. Some folks use sealed golf-cart
batteries, and their A-H capacity is lower. I'm a DX-er, so I like to run
power. But for local comm's, like hitting 2-meter and 440 MHz repeaters and
for simplex comm's on those bands, the scooter batt's are prob. all a guy
needs, provided the sun keeps shining at least every few days.
I hope you'll find it fun to get your Amateur license, or even Commercial, if
you want it. I think you would pass the first test even without studying.
Going higher to General, and then Extra, though, requires some study of the
(arbitrary) things that do not depend on first principles: FCC Regulations,
Frequency Allocations, Satellite Operations, Digital Modes, etc. But, piece of
cake. CW proficiency has been dropped as a requirement: no more Morse Code
test.
Now, maybe you are already a ..."Ham". ;-)
I also recommend HOME POWER MAGAZINE. HOME POWER'S archives are all online and
on CD-ROM (DVD, now?). One can subscribe and read HOME POWER in PDF, or in the
paper copy. Subscribers can view archives and tap the wealth of all "HP"'s
ever published. Even one current copy of the mag. contains so many ads, too,
that I'm sure you'd find what you want in a moment's thumbing the pages, or
clicking the mouse. See what you think? It's a fine resource.
I'm far from self-sufficient here: I don't raise Cattle, Chickens, or Sheep,
nor grow many vegetables, nor malt my own Barley for brewing, nor grow Hops,
nor culture my own yeast for long periods (it gets contaminated with Wild
yeast, which leads to wild flavors). Check our fine institution here of
seed-savers and seed-purveyors of native crops: "Native Seeds Search", founded
by Prof. Gary Nabhan.
Stay safe, healthy, and Strong,
--Joe
