In Gurdjieff tradition 'awareness' as you read, in particular All and
Everything, the Gurdjieff's masterwork, is 'the condition' in which you read
texts. In the Work, they have exercises, probably handed down from Buddhists in
China and Tibet, for approaching a text in a holistic way.
