Merle,

Apropos of nothing, you now remind me of a method that a Ch'an master put to
his students. He suggested they practice like this:

"Put yourself in a condition as if you had just been shocked. Maintain this
condition."

It's a pretty high-energy method, and soon (immediately...) arouses energy in
the body, which, over the course of a few days as this is kept up, makes a
difference. One must still enforce a kind of relaxation over the muscles, and
keep to a good, well-balanced posture. This method can cause energy to come up
from the soles and heels of the feet, and shoot through the legs and them
further upward into the spine and then down the front of the body. Don't let
the belly tense up, and keep a constant watch so no muscular tension begins
anywhere, and as it does, just drop the tension as you sense it. The awareness
in the shocked awareness is intense, but it's not awareness of anything in
particular. This is a good way to see how the body is involved and crucial in
all methods of meditation: this method makes it very obvious, because it
heightens the awareness of this involvement.

The method will keep you very *warm* in Winter, too.

Why do I mention it? Your sentence below reminded me of the old master's
instruction; again: "Put yourself in a condition as if you had just been
shocked".
