If you contrast this to the atmosphere in the holy lands prior to the Crusades where in Islamic territory, grew the most open atmosphere of religious tolerance of the time. Christianity, for all its willingness to do soup kitchens and open altruism, apparently found it within its doctrine to invade and slaughter these lands despite this.
