One Should be careful when One cites old Sutras..... the practice of
medicine was not seen as "right livelihood" in those old writings as
medical practioners dealt in poisons and intoxicants and still do...so
would modern pharmacy be seen in a strict sense to not be right
livelihood? Of course so would modern farming(poisons), entertaining
(lying or creating an untruth), sales (making wants seem like
needs) ...then of course there are various definitions of
intoxication....which might include anything that intoxicates..including
anything that attempts to create sexual desire.....producing any
entertainment, any fashion (promotes desire) producing make
up...cosmetic surgery....art (art is intoxicating if it is any
good)...etc etc....then we get to more poisons...biologists, chemists,
gardeners (even organic gardeners who use bugs to kill other
bugs)......grocers, ..oh and of course any livelihood that deals with
any of the above...which is pretty hard in the modern world to find any
corporation that does not deal with one of the above in one of its
forms ...so working in any corporation or business pretty much is
out...name me a job that does not require you to lie or distract or
delude at some time...there isn't one..that leaves.....begging.

Or one could take a more liberal approach...as most modern Buddhist
schools do.
