Ota Dokan (1432-86) military scholar and poet Some of these tanka poems are pretty good. This is not one of them. In all fairness to Ota Dokan, he was stabbed as he was bathing and reportedly uttered the poem as he died. What a way to go. So if anyone wants to submit their own tanka poem (not necessarily a death poem), take comfort in the fact that even the best poets had their off days.
