It would be nice to have a time-table of features somewhere. It is
unfortunately that the development isn't completely in the open (though, I
want to stress that I understand why), because I can't imagine the drastic
amount of progress that could be made with some community help. I find
that HAProxy and pfSense (and other) to either be overkill or lacking
features.
I come from a world that used F5 / A10 for everything and I like the ease
that Zen provides, though it would be nice if I knew the status of things
since I'm evaluating this for use in a production environment and would
eventually be purchasing both virtual and physical products. If what I'm
evaluating is lacking functionality or isn't indicative of the experience
that I would get with the commercial offerings, then it become a very hard
sell for me to my management.
In any case, ideally, the pieces in zen should be broken into upgradable
pieces. I would think that it would accelerate things and take care of
some of the bugs/concerns people have.
I know that for myself, I have a few major feature desires:
1. 64-bit support on a more modern version of Debian. - Not being able to
install/run things like vm agents can make things not ideal. An example is
ovrt's guest agent.
2. Command line / other API. - I need to be able to control pools/members
programmatically. Would actually be nice to just run commands to create
farms/members/settings and export/import those.
3. Better monitoring support via either SNMP or command-line tools that
can give you stats. Maybe a nagios-compatible plugin.
4. SNMP Traps for monitoring the state of farms/pools and members and
overall status.
Anyway, I certainly don't want to be discouraging because I really
appreciate the work, but it would be great for the community to get a
little more communication here and there. Those are my thoughts. THANK
