Getting the information from ESX would probably be the most efficient, however, also the most difficult since you would probably have to do custom performance templates. Also you would probably have difficulties to setup each VM as it's own device within Zenoss. Getting the data from each VM image would be easier since you could treat each VM as a regular host for which there are plenty of templates and material available. So going to ESX directly is definitely the road less traveled but could also bring rewards whereas going to each VM would be more proven and tested.
