Doesn't this capability/feature exist already in the Enterprise version? I've
been told that direct monitoring of metrics via WMI is possible instead of
having to use SNMP... if that could be clarified, that'd be great.

I'd recommend taking a look at the
$ZENHOME/Products/DataCollector/CollectorClient.py file. You will need
to subclass this to build your "WmiClient" much the same way that the
current TelnetClient does. Once this is done you can get an idea of how
the plugins interact with the client by looking at the command based
plugins under DataCollector/plugins/zenoss/cmd/.
