Frank and hopefully useful response:
There's a thread from (IIRC) a month back wherein the Zenoss folks asked some
questions, specifically requesting comments/suggestions of features present in
Nagios that Zenoss should mirror... or something to that effect. Might be
useful for the community/project if you have additions to pipe in on that.
In addition to that thread, I'd pose the thought that the one stumbling block
in migrating to zenoss from nagios is that the lack of documentation makes
"getting up to speed" difficult.
To contrast the two, while nagios typically is reputed to have a steep learning
curve (by those who are approaching it for the first time) if you just read the
docs there's nothing that is NOT documented in the nagios realm; given time and
room to experiment, you can implement as complex a system as you can envision
in nagios. In Zenoss implementing low-level things like creating new custom
service checks (equiv. custom commands), making a host template/xenpack with
custom checks to apply to hosts (equiv. host templates/services) to apply, and
using some features is undocumented, incomplete, or
non/partially-functional... and additionally require learning Zope just to tie
things together and add them into Zenoss. That's as much a feature as a bug,
IMO ;)
Not knocking the project, I'm sticking with it for a while and considering a
commercial product/support contract to see if it IS viable for me. Meanwhile
trying to make things work, but the learning curve is possibly steeper than
Nagios even. I think that with enough time and bits of help from the company,
the community (including myself) will evolve enough to fill in these bits, and
may even become nagios-like in its completeness ;)

While in the process of evaluating open source alternatives for network
monitoring I have talked to a couple of Nagios users who are currently
evaluating Zenoss for their enterprise as a possible answer to some of
the Nagios shortcomings.
I am doing this evaluation for a client who is seeking an alternative to
a very costly commercial solution currently being pushed by internal
resources.
If possible, I would appreciate whatever information you, as a current
user of Zenoss, might be able to provide aimed at comparing Zenoss to
Nagios.
Thank you for your assistance.
