While I didn't really look at Hyperic, Zenoss isn't that hard to figure
out. I'm a Windows guy, and I got it installed and running on EL5 with
no help save the forums + IRC. So you don't need to be a Linux expert,
just able to spend a little time on it. I think I spent a total of 1
month testing 2.x before getting our Linux guys into moving it into
production. Though we're currently only using it to monitor 5 things:
Zenoss box itself
2 Windows servers that are critical
1 Switch for testing
1 test machine
We of course are slowly adding systems, though I don't know if we'll go
autodiscovery ever.
2.0.4 has been rock solid for me, so much so I haven't bothered
upgrading yet, though I do plan to go to 2.1 when it is ready.
So, as a recent n00b (perhaps still a n00b?), the hardest part for me
was SNMP configuration. It's pretty simple on Windows with the GUI as
long as you have it installed. Informant sometimes fails for no reason,
with no solution I've found. Linux ... is easy if you are on a trusted
network, otherwise spend some time figuring out the configuration file.

Zenoss doesn't seem to be oriented towards network monitoring noobs out of the box... ie, not knowing what the heck you are doing. ;) I say this as a noob myself who has been researching the topic. We need a low budget solution to present to our current clients... to basically increase our quality of service(IE, we're completely reactive right now. Sucky). It's the second linux based open source product I've tried... previous being Hyperic HQ which is a bit noob friendly. READ: Very easy to get going, installation and setup wise. Big issue I had with it was the performance. Horribly bad on CPU and MEM. Based on my minimal experience with Hyperic, you'll want a dedicated box with at least 1GB of ram and a 2+ Ghz CPU.
Anyhoo... Zenoss does have a great manual... the ADMIN guide. Quickstart guide... not so great. Although the company I work probably doesn't need something as complex/capable as Zenoss... there really isn't much out there in the world of open source Network Monitoring tools that'll seem straight forward and logical... especially if your only previous exposure was 4 years ago with Whatsup Gold(basically an install and go product, but a little $$$ and very basic). ;) That would probably work fine for most of clients actually, but then... a company that doesn't want to shell out money for a dedicated IT dept, let alone buying a new POS inkjet printer rather than fixing a broken POS inkjet probably doesn't want to shell out a few grand for networking monitoring software and the hardware as well.
Anyway... like many network oriented apps on Linux, it's a definite RTFM.

ADMIN guide... check it out. It'll tell you what you need to know.
