Thanks, again.

I did finally find a machine to test just an rpm install. That seemed to work
but none of the daemons fired up, or more correctly, they all did "nothing",
i.e., I start them, no error message, but no daemon either. This, with
debug/error reporting level of 10. I went back to building from scratch and am
fine now, but it is a lot of extra work.

I will look into your suggestion of extracting the necessary parts as a tar
ball and see if I can get this all to work without mysql somewhere. If it's
possible, I think it's worth writing up as a "procedure" cuz I gotta think
other people are going to want something like this.

Thanks again for your help.

(btw, if you're ever playing with ubuntu, don't EVER uninstall the python
package. This is one of the avenues I tried... one error message indicated I
had to have python 2.3 or 2.4, but the ubuntu I had was 2.5. Figured that
should be fine, but apparently it wasn't. So I figured I'd uninstall python
and install 2.4. Turns out, a ton of stuff in ubuntu to manage the system is
implemented in python... Uninstalling python essentially uninstalled about half
the system, so bad, it wasn't worth trying to recover, just a lot of wasted
time. (fortunuately, this was a sandbax vmware instantiation, so, easy enough
to re-install and start over.)

Why ubuntu would even offer python as an uninstallable package escapes me,
considering the dependencies. Unless there's something I missed about the
whole thing... but after uninstalling python it was pretty clear from the error
messages the machine was hurting bad not having python available. Go figure.)
